sir,
We the undersigned members of the Medical Staff of
the Colony of Hongkong desire to bring to your notice the
unsatisfactory financial position in which we are placed
in comparison with other branches of the public service in
this Colony and most respectfully bag that you will be
pleased to direct that some action may be taken to remedy
the present condition of affairs,
The sterling salaries of all members of the medical
staff (except that of the head of the Department ) have
been fixed at £480 rising to £720 a year by triennial incre-
ments of £40, so that it takes eighteen years to attain
the maximum salary of a Medical Officer, while it will he
seen from the Table appended to this letter that in no
other appointments in the Hongkong Civil Service are the
increments spread over a longer period than nine years.
Many of us moreover did not join the Hongkong medical
service until after several years experience of medical
work at Home and abroad, and we respectfully submit therefore
for your consideration that this system of triennial incre-
ments should be modified and that our salaries should he
subject to an annual increment of £24 so that we may attain
the maximum salary of our rank after ten years of service.
The ages of the signatories to this letter at the time
of joining the Hongkong medical service were respectively 41
